Google to shut down Buzz, will focus on Google+

Google will soon shut down the Buzz application, Vice President Bradley Horowitz announced on the Google blog on Friday.
“In a few weeks we’ll shut down Google Buzz and the Buzz API, and focus instead on Google+,” Horowitz said.
Users could post updates, messages, videos, etc. on their Buzz page and follow other users’ posts. Besides this, the Buzz API allowed users to share their activity across Google products like Google Reader, etc. and on other platforms like Twitter on their Buzz page.
Launched in 2010, Buzz was Google’s attempt at creating a social network to challenge leading networking sites like Twitter and Facebook. However, Buzz quietly retreated into obscurity.

Plagued with privacy issues, users were soon outraged with the poor security offered on the platform. The issues were later rectified; however, the damage was already done.
Recently launched Google +, the company’s latest social network offering, generated a lot of interest with more than 40 million people reportedly registering on the network.
The search engine giant has now decided to focus entirely on Google +.
Once discontinued, Buzz users will not be able to post messages on their Buzz feed. However, their existing content will be available on their Google Profile and they will have an option of downloading it using Google Takeout.
Today Google shut down Google Labs, a section where new Google product prototypes were introduced.
“Our users expect great things from us; today’s announcements let us focus even more on giving them something truly awesome,” Horowitz said, explaining the changes.
